Dream Teams: When the Jersey You Grew Up Wearing Becomes the One With Your Name on It

Before football becomes a business, it’s usually a dream.
Before contracts, agents, depth charts, roster cuts, combine numbers and negotiations, there’s a kid sitting in front of a television on Sunday afternoon.
He has a favorite team.
A favorite player.
Maybe a jersey that’s two sizes too big.
And somewhere along the way, almost every young football player has imagined what it would feel like to run out of the tunnel wearing that uniform.
For most players who eventually reach professional football, that childhood loyalty has to take a back seat to reality. The NFL Draft doesn’t care which team’s poster hung on your bedroom wall. Free agency is about opportunity. Careers are short. Rosters change. Players go where the opportunity takes them.
But every once in a while, football writes the script perfectly.
The kid actually gets the call from his team.
When the Dream Comes Full Circle
There are some great examples throughout NFL history, including a few where the story sounds almost too perfect to be real.
Cole Kmet — Chicago Bears
Cole Kmet grew up in the Chicago area in a family of Bears fans.
Then, in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears called his name.
Kmet described the moment as a dream come true. His family had grown up cheering for the Bears, and suddenly he wasn't going to Soldier Field as a fan anymore.
He was going as a Chicago Bear.
Tyler Smith — Dallas Cowboys
Tyler Smith grew up in Fort Worth, played high school football at North Crowley and watched the Dallas Cowboys growing up.
In 2022, Dallas selected him with the 24th overall pick.
Suddenly the hometown kid was coming home to play for the team he'd watched as a child.
Smith called the experience "indescribable" and a dream come true.
Vinny Curry — Philadelphia Eagles
Long before Vinny Curry became a Philadelphia Eagle, he was an Eagles fan.
Growing up in New Jersey, Curry had Eagles memorabilia and a Brian Westbrook jersey. He idolized players he watched wearing Philadelphia green.
Then the Eagles selected Curry in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
The kid wearing an Eagles jersey became the man whose own name appeared on one.
Kevin Dotson — Pittsburgh Steelers
Kevin Dotson's connection to Pittsburgh started remarkably early.
He grew up in a Steelers household, watching games with his family and dreaming of playing in black and gold. He later said he'd been thinking about becoming a Steeler since he was five years old.
Then Pittsburgh selected him in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Sometimes the childhood plan actually works out.
Eli Heidenreich — Pittsburgh Steelers
And we don't even have to look very far into the past.
Pittsburgh-area native Eli Heidenreich grew up a Steelers fan. One of his earliest football memories was watching Pittsburgh defeat Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII. James Harrison's famous 100-yard interception return made such an impression that young Heidenreich asked his dad for a Harrison jersey.
Fast-forward to the 2026 NFL Draft.
The Steelers selected Heidenreich in the seventh round.
The kid who once asked for a Steelers jersey now had one of his own.
Von Miller — Dallas Cowboys
Sometimes the Cinderella ending doesn't happen on draft night.
Von Miller grew up in DeSoto, Texas, with the Cowboys as part of his childhood football landscape. His NFL career took him through Denver, Los Angeles, Buffalo and Washington.
Then, in August 2026, at age 37, Miller signed with Dallas.
After more than a decade in the NFL, the hometown connection finally came full circle. Miller described joining Dallas as a "dream within a dream."
Every Player Has a Team
That's part of what makes these stories so much fun.
Professional athletes eventually learn to separate fandom from profession. They understand that an opportunity anywhere in professional football is an opportunity worth appreciating.
But that doesn't erase the kid who came first.
Ask enough football players and you'll eventually hear it:
"I grew up a Cowboys fan."
"My whole family loved the Steelers."
"We never missed a Packers game."
"I've wanted to play there since I was a kid."
Those allegiances become part of a player's story long before anyone knows whether he'll ever have the opportunity to play professionally.
And maybe that's why the rare occasions when everything lines up feel different.
It's one thing to make it to the NFL.
It's another thing entirely to walk into the stadium you watched as a kid, pull on the colors you've associated with football your entire life and realize:
This time, your name is on the back of the jersey.
That's about as close to a football Cinderella story as it gets.
Now We Want to Know Yours
Forget contracts. Forget draft projections. Forget depth charts.
We're talking about the perfect football story.
If you could write the ending yourself, which NFL team would you play for?
The team you grew up watching?
Your hometown team?
The team your dad or grandfather taught you to love?
Or maybe the team whose jersey you wore around the house when you were eight years old pretending the backyard was an NFL stadium?
Tell us your dream team in the comments and TAG THEM.
Let's see which NFL fanbases show up the strongest.
And who knows?
For the athletes reading this, someday we may get to come back to the comments and say:
You called it.
